From Southern California Dance Company, a new educational outreach program: Romantic Vision "I lingered round them, under that benign sky: watched the moths fluttering among the heath and hare-bells; listened to the soft wind breathing through the grass; and wondered how any one could ever imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth." Emily Bronte What are the origins and characteristics of the Romantic Movement? Who were the bright stars of the Romantic Movement in painting? In sculpture? In music (including opera)? In literature ? In theater? What are the enduring effects of Romanticism on culture- fine arts and "pop" culture? Has the Romantic Movement ever really ended? What are examples of Romanticism in dance? Is the Romantic Movement still influencing makers of dance today? Romantic Vision is an educational and performance program centered on dance set to Romantic and Neo-Romantic music, coupled with presentations and discussions focused on answering the above questions, and perhaps raising new ones. The non-dance as well as the dance portion of Romantic Vision are infinitely flexible, and tailored to the specific needs of our presenters. We offer technique classes, workshops, residencies, and in depth analysis of how the structure, dynamics, and content of Romantic musical works guide the creation of some of our dances. Chopin's letters, poems by Keats, Longfellow, Rossetti and Poe, paintings by Delacroix and the pre-Raphaelites, sculpture by Rodin and others, and contemporary examples of Romanticism in fine and performing arts are just a few examples of what can be included along with dance in a Romantic Vision presentation. Examples of dance works set to Romantic Period music include "From Near Shadow," a duet to Chopin's Ballade #1 in G minor; "Lullaby for You," set to Chopin's Berceuse; L'Ivresse, set to "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix" from Samson et Dalilah by Saint-Saens; Flicker, set to mudsic by Rachmaninoff, and works danced to Neo-Romantic compositions by contemporary composers. As part of our programming we can take your students and attendees through the process of choreographing both set dance and guided improvisation-built dances, with a variable number of dancers. From Los Angeles to Chicago, San Francisco to New York City, Paris, London, and worldwide, we will work with dance classes, student companies and professionals as well as students of music, theater, fine arts and the humanities. We can plan closely with instructors in the time leading up to scheduled Romantic Vision presentations to coordinate topical programming. Dancers involved with Romantic Vision have teaching experience and professional level training in jazz dance, modern (contemporary) dance, and ballet.
